The DLM462Z is Makita's 46 cm brushless mower that runs on two 18V LXT batteries for 36V. It is sold as the bare machine, with a mulch plug, so it suits people who already own several Makita 18V packs. With a steel deck and a recommended lawn size of up to 1,900 m², it is built for larger gardens than most battery mowers.

In its favour

  • A 3 in 1 deck cuts, collects or mulches, and the mulch plug is in the box.
  • Ten cutting heights from 20 to 100 mm suit the little and often cuts that mulching needs.
  • Recommended for lawns of up to 1,900 m², the largest stated figure in this guide.

Good to know

  • Body only: batteries and charger are extra, and G-Series batteries do not fit.
  • A listed weight of 39 kg is heavy for a push mower.

Our take

Mulching and collection

Makita describes a 3 in 1 deck: you can cut and collect into a 60 litre box, or fit the supplied mulch plug and return the clippings to the lawn. The box has a fill level indicator, so you know when to empty it before the chute clogs.

Mulching works best on dry grass cut little and often, and the wide height range helps there.

Heights, deck and weather

Ten cutting heights run from 20 mm to 100 mm, which is the widest range among the mulching mowers in our guide. The top setting is handy for rough areas or a first cut in spring. The deck is steel, which Makita calls durable.

The listing gives an IPX4 rating for use in wet weather and a child lock key. Amazon lists the weight as 39 kg, so lifting it into a car or up steps will be a two person job.

Batteries and warranty

You need two Makita 18V LXT batteries and a charger. The listing notes that G-Series batteries are not compatible. Larger packs will extend run time, though Makita does not give a minutes or area figure per charge here, only the overall lawn recommendation.

The warranty is one year as standard with two further years if you register within 30 days of purchase.

Compared with other mulching mowers

The NovorikX 60V 53 cm has a wider deck, self-propelled drive and a battery in the box, but comes from a lesser known brand. The Greenworks 48V 41 cm is far lighter and includes two batteries, though it is rated for lawns of up to 440 m². For a buyer with no Makita packs at all, buying two 18V LXT batteries and a charger on top of the mower changes the picture considerably.

Verdict

The DLM462Z is a strong match for owners of Makita 18V LXT batteries with a large lawn who want a robust steel deck, a wide height range and the option to mulch. If you have no Makita batteries, the Greenworks 48V 41 cm is a complete kit for smaller lawns, and the NovorikX adds self-propelled drive for bigger ones.
