Our take
The articulating head
The head swings through 115 degrees and locks in four positions. That is the feature that makes a pole trimmer useful on hedge tops: angle the blade flat, raise the pole and sweep across, rather than trying to cut downward from a ladder. The angled positions also help on the far side of a wide hedge.
Ryobi lists a 45 cm blade with diamond ground edges for clean cutting. That length is shorter than some hand held trimmers, which keeps the end of the pole lighter and easier to control.
Blade gap and growth
An 18 mm blade gap is stated, and the listing says it can cut through larger branches. That covers normal seasonal growth on most garden hedges. Very old, woody stems may still need a saw.
Battery and charger in the box
The 5.0 Ah ONE+ battery has a four stage charge gauge and an impact protected pack, and the supplied charger refills it in about an hour, according to the listing. The charger also has a maintenance mode that trickle charges the battery. The same battery fits over 40 garden and power tools in the Ryobi range, so it is a sensible starting point if you plan to add a mower or strimmer later.
What the listing leaves out
There is no pole length, overall reach or weight given. Those numbers matter for a long reach tool, and the Bosch GHE 18V-50 TP and Greenworks G40PSH both state their reach. If you need to clear a hedge of a known height, measure it and confirm the reach with Ryobi before buying.
Verdict
This Ryobi kit is the easy choice for someone new to cordless tools who wants a pole hedge trimmer with a battery and charger included and a properly adjustable head. Owners of Bosch Professional batteries with very woody hedges should look at the GHE 18V-50 TP for its wider tooth opening, while the Greenworks G40PSH adds a pole saw.
