The Makita DLM462PT4 is for people with a genuinely big lawn, or tradespeople already invested in Makita's 18 V LXT batteries. It runs on two 18 V packs at once for 36 V, and this kit includes four 5 Ah batteries plus a twin port charger. Our take

Four batteries, two at a time

Because the mower uses a pair of batteries, four packs means one pair can sit on the DC18RD twin port charger while the other pair is cutting. On a lawn near the top of the rated range, that rotation is what makes the 1,900 m² figure practical in one session.

The batteries are BL1850B 18 V 5.0 Ah units, the same packs used across the LXT tool range. The listing is explicit that the mower does not accept G-Series batteries, which are a separate, cheaper Makita line. It also notes that the USB port has been dropped from the charger for EU energy rules.

Deck, heights and grass handling

The 46 cm deck is steel, which Makita calls durable. Ten height positions span 20 mm to 100 mm, a wider range than most rivals here, so both a short spring cut and a long drought-season lawn are covered. It works in three ways: cut and collect into the 60 litre box, or mulch. The box has a level indicator, so you know when to empty it before the cut quality drops.

IPX4 rating means it is built to cope with splashes and use in wet weather, which is useful in a British spring. A child lock key is fitted.

Weight and what it means for you

Amazon lists the weight at 39.8 kg, and there is no self drive. On a level lawn the wheels do most of the work, but pushing that mass up a bank or turning it repeatedly on a narrow strip will be tiring. Wheels are listed at 25 cm. The listing says no assembly is required.

Warranty is one year from Makita, extended by two more years if registered within 30 days.

Compared with the Hayter and Bosch

The Hayter Harrier 48 AD is similar in weight but self-propelled, with a rear roller for stripes, though its height range stops at 60 mm and no lawn area is quoted. The Bosch UniversalRotak 2x18V-37 is far lighter and also uses two 18 V packs, but its rating is 500 m². If your garden sits between those two figures, the Makita's extra batteries are what you are paying for.

Verdict

Choose the DLM462PT4 if your lawn is large and mostly flat, or if you already run Makita LXT tools and want the packs to do double duty. If you mow a slope, the self-propelled Hayter Harrier 48 AD is the kinder option, and for a lawn around 500 m² the lighter Bosch UniversalRotak 2x18V-37 is easier to live with.
