In short
Charge the battery fully, fit the grass box and set the cutting height. Insert the battery and safety key, then press the safety button and pull the start bar, usually in that order. Mow in straight overlapping lines with the grass dry, empty the box when it fills, and remove the battery before you clean or store the mower.

A cordless mower is one of the simplest garden tools to use, but the first time can still be confusing. Safety keys, two step starts and mulching plugs are not always obvious. This beginner's guide walks through setting up, starting, mowing and putting the mower away. The details vary by brand, so keep the manual handy, but the basics are the same on almost every model.
Before the first use
Unbox the mower and fold up the handle as the manual shows, making sure the clamps are tight and the cables are not trapped. Fit the grass box. Charge the battery fully before the first use; some makers suggest the first charge is a full one. Read the safety section of the manual.
Set the cutting height
Most mowers have a single height lever. For the first cut of spring or long grass, start high. For regular summer mowing, many lawns sit between 25 mm and 40 mm. Never remove more than a third of the grass height in one cut.
How to start a cordless mower
Cordless mowers use a two step start to stop accidental starts. The exact order varies, but it usually looks like this.
- 1
Insert the charged battery until it clicks
- 2
Fit the safety key, if your mower has one
- 3
Stand behind the handle with both feet clear of the deck
- 4
Press and hold the safety button or lever
- 5
Pull the start bar against the handle
- 6
Release the button once the blade is running, keeping hold of the bar
Note:Keep hands and feet away from the deck. Releasing the bar stops the blade. Remove the battery before you clear grass or touch the blade.
Mowing pattern
Mow in straight lines, overlapping each pass slightly so you do not leave strips. Do a couple of laps round the edge first so you have room to turn. Walk at a steady pace; going too fast leaves an uneven cut, especially in thick grass. Change direction each time you mow to stop the grass leaning one way. If you want stripes, a rear roller mower helps.
Collecting or mulching
Most cordless mowers collect clippings in a box. Empty it when the indicator shows full or when grass starts to be left behind. Some mowers also mulch: you fit a mulching plug and the clippings are cut finely and left on the lawn as a light feed. Mulching works best on dry grass cut little and often.
Battery tips
Run time depends on the battery size, grass length and how wet the grass is. Many mowers slow down slightly as the battery runs low. A second battery lets you keep going while one charges. Charge batteries indoors at room temperature and avoid leaving them in hot sun.
Putting the mower away
Release the start bar and wait for the blade to stop. Remove the battery and safety key. Empty the grass box, brush off the deck and wheels, and fold the handle if your mower allows. Store the battery indoors. Our guide on how to clean a cordless mower has a simple routine.

Mowing slopes, edges and obstacles
On gentle slopes, mow across the slope rather than up and down, keeping your footing steady. Avoid steep banks with a walk behind mower and never pull the mower towards you on a slope. Take care on wet grass, where it is easy to slip.
Around trees and beds, mow a lap round each obstacle first, then fill in between. Lift the front of the mower slightly over tree roots rather than ploughing into them. Along edges, run one wheel just over the border edge if your mower allows, then tidy with a strimmer or shears.
Keep children and pets indoors while you mow. Clear toys, stones and sticks before you start, as anything left on the lawn can be thrown by the blade or damage it.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my cordless mower start? Usually the battery is not fully seated, the safety key is missing or the start sequence is in the wrong order. See our guide to cordless mowers not working.
Should I charge a new mower battery before use? Yes. A full charge before first use is a sensible start.
Can I mow wet grass with a cordless mower? It is better not to. Wet grass clumps, clogs the deck and gives a poor cut.
How often should I mow? Weekly in the main growing season is typical, less often in spring, autumn and dry spells.
