The Automower 430X and 450X sit near the top of Husqvarna's wired range and look very similar. Both are boundary wire robots aimed at large gardens, both carry the X badge that marks Husqvarna's better equipped models, and both work with the Automower Connect app. The real question is how much lawn you have and how it is laid out. This guide compares the two on the points that matter, using widely published information about the range, and tells you what to confirm with a dealer.

The key differences

Husqvarna has updated the X series over the years, including NERA versions that can work with its EPOS wire-free system using an add-on kit. Exact figures differ between generations, so treat the table as a guide to how the two models relate and check the current specification with Husqvarna or a dealer.

In the classic versions Husqvarna rated the 430X at around 3,200 m² and the 450X at around 5,000 m², with both rated for slopes up to 45%. Those ratings assume the mower runs for the full hours the maker allows on an open lawn.

Area and charge strategy

A robot mower does not cut the whole lawn in one go. It mows until the battery runs low, returns to the charging station, recharges and heads out again. Rated area is really a measure of how much grass the robot can keep trimmed in a week using that cycle.

The 450X carries a larger battery, so it spends more of each day cutting and less time docked. That is why it can look after a much bigger lawn. On a lawn that is well within the 430X rating, the extra capacity of the 450X mainly means it finishes sooner and has more spare time in its schedule, which helps in spring when grass grows fastest.

Measure your lawn first with our lawn area calculator. Then allow headroom: a lawn split by paths, beds or narrow passages takes longer to cover than an open rectangle, so choose a model rated at least a fifth above your measured area.

  1. 1

Measure the total lawn area in m².

  2. 2

Add about 20% if the lawn is split into zones or has narrow passages or slopes.

  3. 3

If the result sits comfortably under the 430X rating, the 430X is enough.

  4. 4

If it approaches or passes that rating, look at the 450X.

Lighting, sensors and extras

LED headlights are the most visible difference on most versions of the 450X. They help you see the mower in the evening and make it more noticeable on the lawn. Many owners prefer to avoid night mowing anyway, because hedgehogs and other wildlife are active after dark, so a daytime schedule is a sensible default with either model.

Both models share the X series features that matter day to day: app control through Automower Connect, GPS assisted navigation that helps them cover complex lawns evenly, theft alarms and PIN protection. Features and sensors have changed between generations, so check the spec sheet for the exact version you are offered rather than assuming a feature from an older model.

Both use small pivoting razor style blades on a cutting disc and work best when cutting little and often. They leave fine clippings on the lawn, which break down quickly.

Installation and dealer support

Both models need a boundary wire unless you buy a NERA version with the EPOS kit. On a large lawn the wire installation is a big job: a long perimeter, guide wires back to the station and loops round islands such as trees and beds. Our guide to installing a robot mower boundary wire walks through the process.

Many buyers in this size class have a Husqvarna dealer survey the garden, recommend the right model and install it. A dealer can also set up guide wires and zones for awkward layouts and handle winter servicing.

Note:Switch the mower off and isolate the charging station from the mains before working on the wire or station. Outdoor mains sockets should be protected by an RCD, and new outdoor wiring is a job for a registered electrician. Wear gloves for any blade work and follow the manual.

Which should you choose?

Choose the 430X if your lawn sits comfortably within its rating, even after adding headroom for zones and passages. It offers the same core X series features for less outlay.

Choose the 450X if your lawn is near or above the 430X rating, is split into many zones, or you want the extra spare time in the schedule and the headlights. For smaller lawns, our best robot lawn mowers guide covers models better matched to a typical back garden, and the robot mowers for slopes guide helps if your ground is steep.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 450X worth it over the 430X? Only if your lawn needs the extra capacity or you want features specific to the 450X such as headlights. On a lawn well inside the 430X rating, the main gain is a shorter mowing schedule.

Can the 430X and 450X work without a wire? The classic versions need a boundary wire. NERA versions can use Husqvarna's EPOS wire-free system with an add-on kit; check compatibility with a dealer.

Do they handle slopes? Both have been rated for slopes up to 45% in their published specs. Check the current figure for the version you buy.

Should they mow at night? They can, but a daytime schedule is kinder to hedgehogs and other wildlife that are active after dark.
